The Ukulele Songbook with almost 100 tabs of the songs you know and love best!

This e-songbook began life in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2005. I was tired of listening and playing nothing but miserable guitar songs so I bought a bright yellow ukulele for about $30 (only £12.00!) and set about learning how to play it.
I quickly found that pretty much any song could be improved by dropping any repeated verses, losing the solo and speeding it up to the point where even Nick Cave and Nirvana sound chirpy.
I also discovered that playing songs I knew and loved was a lot easier than those I didn't and that it's very difficult finding the songs you like, so I started collecting them into a book, and years later, here it is.
I created a set of criteria for deciding which songs an indie rock, post-punker who likes artful pop (that's me) would want to learn and it came down to these....
- The song had to have sing-song potential but not be a painfully obvious an anthem, so I have two Oasis songs but no Wonderwall
- The song had to be a classic but songs with a high kitsch factor also sneak in. So Britney's Toxic is in.
- The song had to work on ukulele. Every now and again I would find a wonderful song that although I could just about, play just didn't sound right. "Moving" by Supergrass was one I wanted to play but just couldn't make work.
- The music and lyrics have to fit on one page. Turning a page mid-song is difficult when you are learning and kills the atmosphere.
- They had to be easy to play. I was just starting out and needed all the help I could get.
So, to make sure that the songs fit on one page I have only added the chords to the first parts of the song. The idea here is that you learn to play the chords then move onto the following verses when you've got the hang of it. I have occasionally changed the chords to better suit the ukulele.

The book is organised with the easy ones first. You might not know that once you've learned to play three chords there are thousands and thousands of fantastic songs you can play.
Once you've learned A, D and E (which takes a few minutes) you can easily play The Tide Is High by Blondie, Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones and many thousands more! What's stopping you?
This site has handy iTunes links so you can remind yourself how a particular song goes (for free)... just click on the links in the sidebar. All these songs are included!
The most important thing to learn from this book is the cheats. Why shouldn't you cut a few corners if it means you can then play all your favourite songs? Of course you will have at some point go back and un-learn these small bad habits but the ukulele is about having fun, doing it now and not about sitting in your bedroom for five years perfecting your fingering.
This book is designed for people who have never played an instrument before and contains the tips along the way to make sure you don't get stuck, but it would is a fantastic for a guitar player wanting to learn the uke. It's simple design means it's great for kids and adults.
So, start at the beginning, find the songs you know (and love), read the cheats and buy the ebook (or real book) and play ukulele today!
